I have a 4 year old can of the carb dip, consumer type, one gallon. I have used it perhaps 10 times. There are what appear to be flakes of aluminum or some other metallic material floating in the liquid. Could this be the lining of the can? May I use the dip with the flakes in the liquid? Should I filter this stuff out or discard the can?

The slivers should not be from the container itself—that would be quite unusual. If there is not a lot of visible contamination (other than the slivers you mentioned), then filtering the product and cleaning and examining the can would be recommended. If the can does show some affect, you should probably either replace the container with another metal paint can from a hardware or paint store or replace the product all together.
