does the carburetor need to be disassembled

Yes, regardless of which Berryman Chem-Dip product you choose (part #0996 or #0905), the will carburetor need to be disassembled before soaking. In the case of 0905, all gaskets and seals that you wish to reuse will also need to be removed.
