I have a can of ChemDip carb and parts cleaner that is a few years old, and I have used it for small engine carburetors perhaps 10 times since purchase. The liquid now has many slivers of metallic flakes in it, perhaps from the lining of the can. Is this normal and can I continue to use the product? Should I filter the particles out with some cheesecloth or filter paper, or is it time to discard the can and purchase a new one?

We have two varieties of Chem-Dip. What is the part # of the one you have? Is the volume of product in the can essentially the same as when it was new? Lastly, how as it generally been stored (in the garage on the concrete floor, on a plastic shelf, etc.)?
It is part number 0996, the consumer grade product. It has been stored on a plastic shelf in the garage for the most part. The volume is pretty much the same as when new.
The slivers should not be from the container itself—that would be quite unusual. If your volume is still essentially “like-new” and there is not a lot of visible contamination (other than the slivers you mentioned), then filtering the product and cleaning and examining the can would be recommended. If the can does show some affect, you should probably either replace the container with another metal paint can from a hardware or paint store or replace the product all together.
