The odor may unfortunately be somewhat persistent. Prior to laundering it, heat and ventilation will help. You might have good luck this time of year either simply airing it out (outside) or, if you want to speed things up, putting a space heater and/or fan on it. After that, spot treatment with a stain remover followed by a heavy wash cycle should help.
