Is the oil not the fuel? Or does the oil just help the parts of the engine work better?

Generally speaking, the fuel is the power source and the engine oil is for lubricity and protection of the moving parts.  That said, 2-stroke engines and 4-stroke engines operate differently from each other as do gas and diesel engines.
